The No. 1 seed Northeastern Baseball (48-9, 25-2 CAA) defeated the No. 2 seed University of North Carolina Wilmington (34-24, 19-8 CAA) with a final score of 9-6 May 24 for the Huskies’ second-ever CAA Championship win. The victory clinched their spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in program history, putting a bow on a record-breaking season.
It was a quiet start to the game for the Huskies; in the top of the second, the Seahawks struck first with a three-run homer to left field to lead 3-0.
But in the bottom of the fourth inning, a leadoff bomb by Co-CAA Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player of the game, redshirt junior left fielder Harrison Fienberg, cut the lead to two.
In the following frame, the Seahawks answered back with another home run — this time a two-run shot to left center — making the score 5-1.
Northeastern’s offense was not done yet. In the bottom of the sixth, junior center fielder Cam Maldonado doubled down the right field line, getting in scoring position for Feinberg who was up next. For his second dinger of the game and fourth of the tournament, Feinberg crushed the ball to left center, making it a two-run game.
The Seahawks once again responded in the top of the seventh with another solo shot for the 6-3 lead.
Still down by three, the Huskies piled it on in the top of the eighth inning. They started the inning with a pair of singles by senior third baseman Jack Doyle and sophomore right fielder Ryan Gerety, putting two players on base for the Huskies. Maldonado was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the red-hot Feinberg, who then smashed a bases-clearing double to right center to tie the game.
Junior shortstop Jack Goodman then reached first base on a fielding error and stole second to set up junior second baseman Carmelo Musacchia, who cracked a double to center, scoring two more for the Huskies for their first lead of the game at 8-6. Junior designated hitter Matt Brinker then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Musacchia for the 9-6 lead. A flyout ended the Huskies’ clutch six-run eighth inning.
Senior right-handed pitcher Brett Dunham came in to close out the game, striking out two of the three batters he faced for his fifth save of the season.
Junior starting right-handed pitcher Aiven Cabral pitched 4.2 innings, striking out four batters with just one walk. Senior left-handed pitcher Jack Bowery entered to finish the fifth and pitched a total of 3.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits and two strikeouts.
The Huskies are both the 2025 CAA regular season and tournament champions, and are now NCAA tournament-bound. Northeastern has won 27 straight games and has 48 total wins — the most ever by a CAA team.
Northeastern’s placement in the NCAA tournament will be announced May 26 at noon.
